- WAIT A MINUTE: Serena and Chuck don't stay up late at night braiding each other's hair?! My illusions are shattered.
- The Blair and Chuck tension in the back room at the party was almost hotter than Chuck's graduation-day orange ensemble.
- Gossip Girl does not pull any punches when she's spreading the goss, folks. Is GG totally Dorota? Remember when Blair made her sign up for Facebook? It could so be Dorota.
- Keith Vee Dee Dubs is coming to the UES?! Take that in your face, RUFUS.
- Don't get me wrong. I want Georgina and Blair to be roommates next year, because it would be beyond amazing. But Michelle Trachtenberg has a pilot that was picked up by NBC for the fall. How's that going to work?

Star Trek
Saturday afternoon, Mr. H and I decided to go ahead and take in the cinematic masterpiece of the century. But when we got there, we were too late for Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, so we had to see Star Trek instead.
I kid.
Be aware that this is a bit spoilery. So, read at your own risk.
I kid.
Be aware that this is a bit spoilery. So, read at your own risk.
- Now, originally I was in the "Shatner iz teh hottest Kirk EVA" camp. But then I saw the movie, and I gotta say that Chris Pine really has Shatner's devil-may-care sexiness that I adore. He even sprawled in the captain's chair like Shatner. He is really, really hawt. So I was conflicted on the Shatner/Pine question. But then! Then I saw some random papparazzi photos of Chris Pine, and I'm totally not into it. Which led me to the obvious conclusion:
I love Captain James T. Kirk.
You see, it's not the actors. It doesn't matter who's playing him. I just love his sexy, take-charge nature. So there you have it. I am in love with a fictional character.
(And it's not the first time, either.) - So, of course, J.J. Abrams tested the above point by having this little kid have a rad car chase with a robot police officer. (Is the word rad still allowed in 2009?) And, of course, I found this kid intriguing in a creepy way. Because he was Kirk. Sigh.
Anyway, the car chase set off the mechanical engineer in Mr. H like WHOA. "First of all, how is that car even running? And where are they getting gas and oil to put it in it? It's like 300 years old! Even if they were taking care of it, they would've needed replacement parts, and where are they getting replacement parts for something built 300 years ago?"
I don't know. Aliens? - The initial problem I had with the reboot was the realization that Kirk and Spock, one of the most amazing bromances of our time, was not in play for 3/4 of the movie.
I have a bromance problem. Let's explore it another time.
So every time Spock and Kirk got into it, I would turn to Mr. H and say, "But when are they going to fall in love?!?!"
If only you could have seen the daggers.
But the point is that no, this Star Trek does not have the great Kirk and Spock love we all know existed. (KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!) Which is pretty ingenious, because instead we're going to get to watch Chris Pine/Kirk and Zachary Quinto/Spock explore that relationship in the future films. Which, as an ardent supporter of any and all really awesome bromance, I am completely interested in
And it works, because Kirk and Spock fell into bromance on the small screen. To be honest, I never really watched the television show; so by the time the films rolled around for me, Kirk/Spock (Spirk? Kock? Obviously, it's Kock.) was a given. I'm really excited to see the Kock bromance evolve. - Let me preface this by saying that I'm Shatner's biggest fan. Seriously. I love him. I own his albums, and I actually listen when they come up on shuffle. You have no idea how attractive I find him, even in his toupee-wearing, Santa-faced days. (AKA today.)
I know there was a big hullaballoo on the Internet last year about how the entire world was going to implode because Shatner wasn't involved in the reboot! After seeing the movie, I can safely say I'm totally cool with his noninvolvement. It would not have worked in the story. Period. The end. - It's pretty clever how they've created this alternate reality for the new cast to exist in. Clever in that they're going to get lots of sequels and lots of money. And therefore lots more chances for Chris Pine to hang out in his boxer briefs.
Which I am totally on board with.
That said, does anyone else find time travel utterly confusing? I mean, even when it's a fairly simple concept (like in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), I have the HARDEST time figuring it out. Which is why I stopped watching Lost like eighteen seasons ago.

Random Five
- The Internet is awash with how amazing last week's American Idol was. Seriously, I was underwhelmed. It was a solid B, I think. The vocals were great, but I was bored. Someone (Adam) needs to go completely bonkers (Adam) for me to grade this show an A anymore (Adam).
- I basically forced my coworker to read The Hunger Games. I kept telling her all about it as I was reading it, and she kept saying it sounded too disturbing for her. And now she can't put it down. (Cue rabid, evil laughter here.) It's really fun to watch her progress through the book. Right now she hopes "Peeta isn't playing Katniss." Oh, if only she knew.
- I am currently reading two nonfiction books from wildly different scenes: Beyond Heaving Bosoms and The Unlikely Disciple. Completely different books, yet because both are nonfiction the critical thinker inside of me has been awoken with a vengeance. I'm running out of Post-Its!
- First week into Middlemay, and I'm already a failure.
- Normally I would say that I like bad movies, okay? But Bride Wars really tested that statement. The characters weren't deliciously evil, they were just evil. It wasn't even FUN. Oh, Anne Hathaway, what have you done?!

American Idol, Top 5 Elimination
- What is up with Paula's boobs? They are approximately eleven times bigger than normal, and hoo boy are they out there.
- I hate that stupid game that Ryan plays where the odd person has to choose the group he thinks he belongs with. I wish Adam had pulled an Archuleta and resisted the evilness. That said, I am totally shocked by Adam and Kris in the bottom three.
- My assumption is that the judges gave Taylor Hicks a standing ovation because his song was over.
- WHY IS ADAM IN THE BOTTOM TWO?! He is overall the most talented person on this show ever in the history of the world. I hate the voting public. I hate this show. I hate that I care. I hate everything.
- Matt Giraud goes home. Good riddance.
GG: The rich get richer, and the Rufuses get Rufusier.
- I will not speak of the love that dare not speak its name. Mostly because it's boring, but mostly because I hate it. (But for some reason Crazy and Stoned are pretending they will still be together next year when they're at college. Please.)
- I TOTALLY forgot that Chuck Bass plays basketball. Remember the lost weekend? Yeah, I didn't until just now. He wears the best basketball outfits. This time he's wearing a baby blue ascot, a pastel purple polo with popped color (say that five times fast), and a black velour zipped cardigan. No headband though, sadly.
- Chuck knows Blair so well, he knows that a beret means she's spying. Chuck-Blair espionage is amazing. I so want a spin-off detective series starring Chuck and Blair. Potential title: Beauty and the Bass. Seriously, television needs more private eyes who can say, "No one's killing anyone, it's a co-op cocktail party."
- GEORGINA. She looks ten years younger without all the raccoon eye makeup she was sporting last year. Apparently, Jesus likes the natural look on his newbies.
- Gabriel is a big lying liar who's going to cheat Rufus out of all his monies, which means that Dan won't get to go to Yale for some reason. I don't really understand why no one on this show (especially the supposedly poor ones) knows about student loans. They're these magical things that don't even start accruing interest until after graduation. I mean, it sucks to have to pay them off, but hypothetically you've got a job that gives you money by then.

American Idol, Top 5 Peformances
Five contestants, five numbered points. Should be easy, right?
- Kris ditched the guitar and sang something kinda boring. So boring I don't remember was song it was and he finished singing it like five minutes ago. So boring I don't want to rewind to figure out what it was.
- Allison sang a very controlled version of "Someone to Watch Over You." Kara, Randy, and Paula acted like Simon was insane for saying he didn't think Allison could win the competition at this point, which only served to point out (yet again) that Randy's stupid, Kara's drunk, and Paula's high.
- Matt got a very weird face from mentor Jamie Foxx when he sang, and then Jamie Foxx decided to be insane (because, why not?) by not giving Matt any feedback, but then calling him back to tell him to change the key. Do you think the producers told Jamie to do SOMETHING, ANYTHING to earn his American Idol keep? Bizarre. Okay, have you guys seen that stupid new show on ABC Family, Roommates? It's awful; don't watch it. But in one episode this weird kid finds a hat like Matt is wearing tonight with a spider on it. He says, "It's like if Justin Timberlake and a spider had a baby...that was a hat." This is what I think of when I watch Matt sing.
- Gokey. God! (That was a cry of exasperation, not a cry of devotion. Just to clarify.) Jamie Foxx continued to go insane by spreading his arms wide and telling Danny Gokey, "You wanted to go like this, but then you look at me like he's looking at this..." and then he got all up in Gokey's grill and made him sing with their faces so close together that they were probably breathing in each other's carbon dioxide. I would ask here if Jamie Foxx is on drugs, but I don't really care. I prefer to believe that Jamie Foxx just gives all people the advice that they have to do their job with him completely in their face, distracting them. I wish he would come to my cubicle and stick his face in mine when I'm trying to send high priority e-mails. People would be like, "Why is Jamie Foxx in your face all day long?" And I would say, "He's teaching me to be awesome. JEEZ!"
- Adam Lambert. God! (Now that's a cry of devotion, people.) Adam sang "Feeling Good." Even Jamie Foxxsmiled at Adam Lambert's AWESOME: "You don't care about who I am at all." Jamie Foxx is the most humble man alive. I think Adam Lambert is like a drug, okay? I'm always going to get something out of him, but I think I've built a tolerance to him. He didn't knock my socks off, but that's because for Adam Lambert to knock your socks off he's gotta take it to like one hundred gajillion percent. Of course, it was good. (Is that even a question when Adam's name is up?) It just wasn't...PHENOMENAL.
17 Again
- I've never been on the Zac Efron train. To be honest, I've never actually seen him act (outside of SNL a few weeks ago). I've also never really found him all that attractive. He's got the worst case of gayface this side of Chace Crawford, and I'm just not into that. (Gimme beards and burl, baby.) All that said, I think this kid is in the business for the long run. He really had some great comedic timing and did a great job with most of the emotional stuff. (His line reading at the beginning of the movie, "This baby is my future now." had me worried, but he came back strong.) Also, he's kinda hot, as long as he's not wearing that stupid, slouchy hat.
- Don't spend too much time trying to figure out the math of this movie. I've already spent the car ride home thinking about it, and that's thirty minutes too long because it DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Matthew Perry and Leslie Mann have been married for twenty years, since she got pregnant, but their oldest child is a senior in high school and presumably eighteen. Whatever.
- Thomas Lennon was hilarious. He plays a software mogul with a black AmEx (sign me up!), who was Zac/Matthew's best friend. He coined my new favorite term ever ("Googlable") and his response to whether or not Zac/Matthew was a time-traveling vampire or cyborg was priceless ("Vampire wouldn't tell; cyborg wouldn't know.").
- I think it must be written in Zac Efron's contract that he gets to dance and play basketball in every movie. I so cannot wait for the scene in Me and Orson Welles where Zac takes Orson on one-on-one and then dances in victory.
- You guys, I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: I don't know why Eastwood, Gilliam, Cameron, and Jackson are even bothering to put out movies this year. 17 Again is obviously the best of 2009.

Quantum of Solace
Oh weekend, you are so great for watching things and reading things and drinking things. Thanks for that. Harklerad and I watched Quantum of Solace on Friday. Yes, I know my movie choices of late are rather dated, but in this instance I'm glad I waited.
- Okay, actually at the beginning of the movie I thought, "Why did I wait so long?!" Daniel Craig wears suits (tuxes, sweaters, trousers, underwear, whatever) very, very well.
- I don't want to buy into the whole "bromance" phenomenon, but I do find myself enjoying male-male relationships more and more these days (cough, ChuckandNate, cough, CappieandEvan, cough.) Of course, I'm a sponge and more susceptible to these pop culture trends than I wish I was, but I giggled a bit when Felix the American CIA agent was all pouty over the thought of killing Bond. And then Felix, of course, gave Bond critical information and basically a head start that saved his life. So Felix and Bond lurve each other. I hope their love affair continues in the next, new Bond movie. Actually the next, new Bond movie should totally focus on the bromance between Felix and Bond.
- So Camille's backstory is that she used to be Bolivian Secret Service. Camillie is your classic TSTL (too stupid to live) heroine. We're told (or we assume) that she's a kick-ass female because she was a member of the frigging Bolivian Secret Service. This would be much easier to believe if she hadn't "helped" alert Bond to approaching aircraft by saying, "They're coming fast!" Um, from which direction? How many? Helpful! Also, she shivers in a cave they've fallen in rather then look for an escape. So finally, her moment comes and she kicks the bad guy who killed her family's (have you ever noticed that all bad guys have killed SOMEONE'S family?!) ass and kills him--then she cowers in a corner while the compound she's in is engulfed in flames. WTF? Seriously, TSTL. Case closed.
- Remember that time you first saw Daniel Craig and you were all, "He's okay, I guess. A little goofy looking, maybe."? Yeah, Daniel Craig is hot. REALLY hot.
- So, what does the title have to do with anything?

Books and the Recession
I've been building these up, so the links may not be exactly...timely.
- Ayn Rand's readership is now expanding beyond hipster teenage boys.
- A couple weeks ago, all the major news outlets were touting this story. Romance sales are actually UP right now, so the time's ripe for my Civil War-era romance between a Yankee spy and a Southern belle. Now I just need a really great nom de plume.
- Penguin's The Great Crash sold almost 20,000 copies in 2008 despite the fact it was published in 1969. Remember that whole "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" saying? Well, those who wait until history cycles back to bite them in the ass are doomed to pay 2008 inflation prices for a book they wouldn't have even needed if they had just loaned it from the library back in 1969 and used the knowledge to avoid the current economic meltdown. Hindsight: It's 20/20.
- More authors are being published in original trade paperback. I see no issue, except that my taste in expensive things now runs toward the literary as well: I bought three hardcover books this past month.
- It looks like I'm not the only one overwhelmed by e-book pricing, but I'm interested in Harper Studio's initiative. I particularly like that you get a free e-book with the purchase of the hardcover; I think all publishers should be doing this. It seems like educational publishers are pricing e-books at 50% across the board, but they have more to gain in selling e-books (like cutting down on used textbook sales) than the trade publishers do.

Mamma Mia!
I finally got around to watching Mamma Mia! I had actually totally planned on watching it on the plane to Paris last month, but I slept and read a not-so-great book on the way there. It's probably best, as I would have disturbed tons of people with my inappropriate bursts of laughter. Not that the film is especially comedic, but those scene cuts sure are.
- In what decade is this supposed to take place? I mean, Pierce was a hippie, Colin was a headbanger, Meryl was in a 70s (judging by the costumes her group wore) girl group--ALL AT THE SAME POINT IN HISTORY. And then, in the present day, Amanda is wandering around in very 80s-esque shorts, plus the editing (oh, the film editing) is like watching early 90s pop-rock music videos. So color me confused.
- This was produced by Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, who have become quite the uber-producers. Remember the little-movie-that-could, My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Are they making a new career of producing surprise hits? That could be fun.
- The supporting cast (minus Pierce Brosnan, but plus his chest hair) is amazing. Julie Walters is a hoot; Stellan SkarsgÄrd is creepy and looks stoned and is basically pretty much everything you expect Stellan to be; and Christine Baranski was basically likable, diva self.
- Amanda Seyfried is awesome. She is flawlessly beautiful, and I love that I know now she can do fluff along with the heavy lifting on Big Love. (Are y'all watching Big Love? Amanda is...well, there are no words. Or if there are, I just don't have them.)
- This movie looks like it was the most fun movie to make ever in the history of cinema, except for maybe the Clooney-era Oceans films.

Early Robin Hood Thoughts
Now that we've been given our first look at Russell Crowe as Robin Hood (with gray highlights, no less. Please.), we've been forced to think about this movie again. So, here are some early (early, early, early) thoughts:
- Russell plays both Robin Hood and Nottingham. And sure, there are some great theories out there as to why, but I honestly don't know if I can take two-plus hours of people constantly remarking on how similar they look. It'll be like when Boston Legal used to constantly break down the fourth wall. It was irritating and not nearly as funny as they thought it was.
- When was the last time Russell Crowe was in a bona fide hit? No, seriously, I'm curious.
- It's weird, but I kinda miss the preternatural green tights.
- Okay, okay. If both Cate and Russell are on, and Ridley Scott pulls it together...this could be good.
- Why is Russell wasting his time learning how to shoot a bow and arrow when hotel courtesy phones hurt that much more?

American Idol, Top 7 Elimination Redux
- And so the question of whether or not Adam Lambert can dance has been answered. That dude's got rhythm. Can he do any wrong in my eyes? Tune in next week to find out! Also, the question of whether or not Paula has any shame has also been answered. She does not. She put herself in the dance routine. Next question.
- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Adam Lambert washed a dog in the Ford commercial. SQUEE!
- Mr. H: "Tonight I learned that if you are not a white male, you have no chance on American Idol."
- My local FOX commercials tag: Check out the new look Susan Boyle is sporting...on the streets. (Seriously, they put emphasis on "streets." This is the first time I have ever wanted to watch FOX news. Because really, what the hell is she wearing NOW?!)
- It's really too bad for Allison that little girls are evil and only vote for cute boys. Otherwise she'd be rocking this shit, because we all know that the only people who vote for American Idol are twelve-year-old girls and my mom.

American Idol, Top 7 Performances Redux
- Adam Lambert has officially earned the right to do whatever the fuck he wants. Dude's amazing.
- Nice facial hair, Anoop. Too bad we won't be seeing you on TV when it finally grows in ten years from now.
- What was in Kara's cup? She tried to make Ryan stop when he grabbed it, and then he recoiled after tasting it. Gin, vodka, bourbon? What do you think is Kara's poison of choice?
- I liked Alison's vocals, and honestly, I didn't hate the arrangement. But I'm the only one. I was digging it during the performance, but Mr. H grimaced like he was in pain.
- Lil Rounds is damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. She sings a ballad, they tell her she isn't R&B enough; she sings something with a beat, and they tell her that she didn't pick a song that shows her vocal control. If I were Lil Rounds, I would seriously fling myself off the stage, screaming, "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!?!" It's absolutely ridiculous what they are doing to her; I think she's fabulous.

Southland, Episode 1-02
- SERIOUSLY?! Has Tom Everett Scott suffered a debilitating disease of the tongue? Why doesn't he speak?! OH! He finally got some lines, but they’re making him stupid? I don’t get his character at all. Which is sad, because I like him.
- I don’t think anyone who belongs to a book club is reading Ann Rice novels.
- Dewey retires simply because he was shot? What a pussy.
- That bean bag, less-lethal weapon scares me. In the heat of the moment, how do you make sure it’s not loaded with actual bullets? Has anyone ever been injured by one of those before?
- Making out in the same bar your daughter is in: SMART. Your daughter telling you your mistress is so cool: HYSTERICAL. Telling said daughter she’s being disrespectful to her mother: PRICELESS!

American Idol, Top 7 Elimination
- Kara DioGuardi literally said, "Yay!" when Ryan announced her name.
Dear Kara,
It is lame to "Yay!" yourself. I'm sorry that you are not getting the attention from the fans and your fellow judges that you need and feel you deserve. Not shut the eff up and watch the show. Silently.
Sincerely, Pop Five - Though I was pleasantly surprised that the Idols appeared to be singing live during the group song (doing the thing that, you know, they're supposed to be doing), I was disappointed that Adam was definitely the worst in the bunch. What's up with that?
- I hate Zac Efron's hair. I hate his stupid, slouchy hats even more.
- Miley Cyrus has a bad case of the mush-mouth. I did not understand a single word that she sang. Not one single word. She could have been sing-whining about Radiohead for all I know. Jeez. (Mr. H says that when you sing like that, it makes the tone of your voice sound better. His conjecture is that she's doing it on purpose. My conjecture is that it's not working, which was evident from the blood flowing from my eardrums by the end of the song.)
- I was really shocked by Matt Giraud's aborted ouster. First of all, I kinda like him. And I really thought Anoop was done. Second of all, what a waste of the save. Why save someone that has no shot at winning? I do not understand these new-fangled devices the AI producers keep throwing at us.

American Idol, Top 7 Performances
Lucy the insatiable Labradoodle is not pleased that I'm trying to type up this post. She keeps sticking her nose under my hands as I type. It's not easy to fend off a fifty-pound dog with no concept of boundaries.
- The concept of two judges judging at a time is lame. Just schedule appropriately Fox. Why is this so difficult? I honestly don't understand.
- Armageddon (the movie, not the apocalyptic event) in any context makes me giggle uncontrollably.
- Even when Adam Lambert does something effing weird, you can't help but love it because his voice is out-of-this-world amazing.
- Matt Giraud is cute. In another, Adamless, season, I might even root for him.
- I really don't get the Lil Rounds hate that Simon is spewing, which makes me vaguely uncomfortable. Because I never disagree with Simon. Ever.

Southland, Episode 101
- I really like this show. Really, really like it. Liked it enough to watch the pilot twice, just for my own pleasure. I'm sure it will be canceled in short order.
- I wasn't aware that Tom Everett Scott could play retarded deaf-mute so well. Good for him.
- Southland goes ahead and uses the bad words we know that hoodlums and cops in L.A. are using. Okay, maybe they're not using ALL of them, but I appreciate the effort. The bleeping adds to the raw feeling the show has.
- Ben McKenzie does wide-eyed newbie well. That said, wide-eyed newbie cop has been beaten to death. Hopefully Southland can pull something interesting out of it.
- So, apparently Michael Cudlitz's character is gay. I thought it was weird he was in the same bar as that bush-workin' guy at the end of the day, but I honestly didn't pick up the gay bar vibe. I'm so dense.
Greek, Episode 2-13, Engendered Species
- Dale and Calvin's new chemistry as Rusty's two best non-Kappa pals is awesome. These two have come such a long way. And more Dale is always good in my book.
- I am really enjoying Rebecca's character arc. She's becoming much more palatable.
- WTF is Janeane Garofalo doing on Greek? Don't get me wrong, this part is tailor-made for her. But it seems like an odd career choice. Or is Greek doing better than I realize?
- I am seriously torn on the Casey/Max vs. Casey/Cappie issue. For the past two seasons, I full-on wanted Casey and Cappie to end up together in the end. But I am seriously loving Max, even if I think he and Casey are headed to a huge blow-out when she finds out what he gave up for her.
- What the fuck is up with Evan?

American Idol, Top 8 Elimination
- America just wasn't ready for Scott's brand of punk rock.
- So, did the make-up artists borrow Adam's glitter for the Ford commercial shoot to save money? Because we are in a recession.
- Just to be clear: We have an hour-long episode on Tuesday that runs over by ten minutes, cutting off one of the best performances of the season from most people's DVRs. Meanwhile, we're going to go ahead and keep the hour-long results show on Wednesday. If, Fox, you're intent on keeping Wednesdays padded, why not just add an extra half-hour on Tuesday where it really counts?
- Scott hasn't been great in weeks, so Paula and Kara's undying loyalty to him made me feel vaguely uncomfortable. Sort of like when your racist friend goes out of his way to be super polite to your black friend? Everyone knows what's going on and everyone is uncomfortable.
- I hate that Flo Rider song more than words can convey.

American Idol, Top 8 Performances
- The Internet told me that Paula's contract is up this season. Is this the reason she has become suddenly coherent and seemingly insightful? (I said seemingly.) Her responses are obviously scripted, but at least she's making an effort--right?
- I can't recall Simon ever giving a standing ovation before.
- If Mr. H wasn't the smartest person living in my house, my DVR would have cut off during the FINAL COMMERCIAL BREAK. That is, before Adam (the Awesome) sang. Not cool, Fox. If you're going to run an episode long, at least put Scott in the final slot then. And next week, when Scott isn't around, you can probably just go ahead and start scheduling Gokey in the Fringe slot. I won't mind.
- That said, I think Scott's done. I guess mainstream America just isn't ready for blind punk-rockers.
- "Mad World" is one of those songs I can never get out of my head. Ever. It's a great song, but it also reminds me a lot of when Donnie Darko came out and everyone put the lyrics to this song on their AIM away messages when they went to bed. Because we were so. deep.
